About Sinte Gleska University

Sinte Gleska University (SGU) serves the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and endeavors to provide each Lakota person the opportunity to pursue an education in a way that is relevant to career and personal needs. Chartered by the Sicangu Lakota tribe and named for the Brulé Chief Sinte Gleska or Spotted Tail, SGU plans, designs, implement sand assesses post-secondary programs and other educational resources uniquely appropriate to the Lakota people in order to facilitate individual development and tribal autonomy.

Academics
SGU offers master’s, bachelor’s, and associate degrees, and certificate programs. Master’s degree programs include education, clinical mental health counseling, and guidance counseling. Bachelor’s degrees include education, liberal arts, computer sciences, environmental science, human services, Lakota history and culture, fine arts, business management, and more. Certificate programs include computer sciences, nursing, building trades, and office technology.

Actress Mary McDonnell first got acquainted with SGU while filming the movie Dances With Wolves, through her dialogue coach the late Doris Leader Charge. During the years, Mary’s interest and passion towards supporting and spreading awareness about the university grew.
