TNT is expanding the run of Major Crimes‘ fifth season.

The cable network has handed out an eight episode back order to the Mary McDonnell fronted procedural, TVWise has confirmed. With the additional order, the show’s fifth season will now consist of 21 episodes. News of the back order was first reported by TV Line.

Major Crimes, which is TNT’s flagship show now that Rizzoli & Isles is coming to an end, has earned a back order beyond its initial pick up every season since its sophomore run in 2013. The show’s fourth season received its largest order to date, when the network expanded the run to 23 episodes.

This eight episodes back order comes after a mere two episodes from the show’s fifth season have aired. The season premiere opened to 3.62 million viewers and a 0.4 A18-49 rating, making it the fourth highest rated cable series for the week in total viewers. The second episode, which aired this past Monday, grew week-over-week, averaging 3.65 million viewers and a 0.5 A18-49 rating.

TVWise understands that TNT plans to air the fifth season of Major Crimes in two distinct runs, with the initial thirteen episode order going out over the Summer, with the additional eight episodes following in Winter 2016. Owing to their long running deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, Universal Channel continues to hold UK rights to the show with plans to air the fifth season this Autumn.
