When Major Crimes returns with the first episode of its final season on Tuesday night, three 15-year-old boys vanish from a Catholic high school field trip, and new Asst. Chief Mason (Leonard Roberts) orders Major Crimes to treat their disappearance as a critical missing.

At first, the Major Crimes doesn’t really feel as if it is a case for their unit, but when one of the boys’ backpacks, which contains his insulin injections, is found on the bus, it becomes a matter of life and death.

The investigation also brings up issues for Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who happens to be a devout Catholic and has ties to one of the priests at the high school.

“The Catholic church is a tender spot in terms of our social/cultural life, and I’ve tried to avoid writing about that, but I can’t in this story,” series creator and showrunner James Duff exclusively tells Parade.com. “I had to deal with it. And yes, Sharon’s faith does get tested. She actually ends up conducting an interview inside a confessional with her own priest as she tries to get to the bottom of everything.”

In addition to the missing the boys, Sharon receives more evidence that serial killer Phillip Stroh (Billu Burke) may be returning to Los Angeles and she worries what that might mean for Rusty (Graham Patrick Martin).

The “Sanctuary City: Part 1” episode of Major Crimes premieres Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.
