Grand Canyon revolved around six residents from different backgrounds whose lives intertwine in modern-day Los Angeles. At the center of the film is the unlikely friendship of two men from different races and classes brought together when one finds himself in jeopardy in the other's rough neighborhood.
♦ Look, Mack, I don’t even know what I’m gonna say from one second to the next. The world doesn’t make any sense to me any more. What’s going on? There are babies lying around in the streets. There are people living in boxes. There are people ready to shoot you if you look at them. And we’re getting used to it. The world is so nuts, it makes me wonder about all the choices that we’ve made.
♦ No and I’ll tell you why I reject your headache Mac, because it’s inappropriate. If I am right and these events are truly miracles, then it’s an innapropriate response to get a headache in the presence of a miracle.
♦ Mack, you think that I want that baby because l’ve got some hole in my life or I think I’m gonna have some hole in my life, but that’s not it. Or if it is it, it’s just a part of it. That baby needs someone to love it and take care of it. Something has happened. You can’t go back and have it not happen. Some kind of connection has been made. lt has to be played out. What if these are miracles, Mack? Maybe we don’t have any experience with miracles, so we’re slow to recognise them.
In Mary’s words…
God, I’ve been so lucky. I can’t tell you what you’re doing for me today! I had no idea I would be revisiting my life as an actress. This is amazing. I’m really impressed with my career! [Laughs.] Larry Kasdan. What a sensitive, kind, intelligent, funny storyteller. I think he understands Los Angeles almost better than anyone I’ve ever worked with. He gave forth this story about life here and so interestingly predicted what was about to happen in Los Angeles over the next couple of years, put it into one story, and then gave us this extraordinary crew to work with and an amazing cast. There was just a collective feeling that this was an opportunity to tell a difficult story in a way that was lighthearted, and to touch on some very dangerous things that probably would happen that we probably would survive. It was fascinating. [from “Mary McDonnell on Battlestar Galactica and going mute in front of Robert Redford” by Will Harris]
